Build Psychic When Learning at Home
15 years ago, I felt the benefits of studying at school. The benefit is that I’m happy because I can meet with friends. But now everything is different after the COVID-19 pandemic makes everyone have to study at home.
I’m a brother who has a 13-year-old younger brother who is currently attending school. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed my brother’s learning habits to carry out the learning process at home. This transition period made him have to adapt to new habits. As an older brother, I have to be able to help with learning at home.
I wondered if he could have a negative impact if I didn’t help with the learning process at home. The negative effects that can be experienced are psychological disorders.
Studying at home made him feel lonely, because he didn’t see his teacher and friends. I’m aware of his feelings and I have to assist the learning process by combining education that can improve mental health.
There are school activities that can’t be found at home. Even though these activities can improve mental health and make you psychologically good. These are the activities:
- School is a place to meet friends to socialize. The presence of other people will make us less lonely.
- School provides space for discussion by completing assignments. This interaction will train communication and cooperation with other people, so that we feel the benefits of solving problems by way of discussion.
- Talent development lessons will foster a sense of pleasure because we are practising a hobby. Doing a hobby repetitively will make you psychologically good.
- The school provides guidance counselling classes to help solve problems. Counselling classes train us to share problems with teachers.
- School is a routine for practising discipline.
To have a pleasant experience at home. I do activities that are useful for reducing stress and depression while studying at home. I combine education that can improve mental health.
1. Get into a routine that makes you happy
I told my brother to always do the routine of getting up early, having breakfast, and studying. This routine is useful for exercising discipline and obeying responsibilities. People must learn discipline to have an independent character.
Routines are carried out every day, but the difference is in combining them with activities that make you happy. I guide his study by starting with the subjects he likes.
2. Providing education about COVID-19
Often seeing news of the death of COVID-19 can make an increase in worry. These feelings will interfere with mental health if not converted into positive things.
Therefore, I provide insight into COVID-19 with a narrative that is easy to understand according to their needs.
I invited him to have a casual discussion about COVID-19. I gave him a narrative that made him not afraid. I focus on ways to prevent it rather than giving information about the risk of death from COVID-19.
Of all the education provided, children will always imitate behaviour. I always practice how to prevent it at home to become a habit of life.
3. Accompany the learning process at home
The presence of other people will help the learning process. This presence will make them feel comfortable.
We can become teachers at home by helping to complete lesson material. Not all subject matter can be understood properly, this presence can help him in solving problems.
Support isn’t only giving motivational sentences and providing the best facilities for the school, but attendance is of great value for him to achieve his achievements
Take time to sit next to him to guide learning.
4. Recognize interest in school subjects
Everyone likes activities that are of interest. They will do it sincerely. This must be applied in the learning process. As a brother, I must know what learning materials I like.
Starting to recognize interest in school subjects is the best way to guide children in the learning process. Of all school materials, there must be material that is of interest to children. Starting to learn with material of interest will make children excited.
As a guide, we must be good at adjusting the interests of school subjects to start learning.
5. Using the desired learning style
I realized that each child’s learning style is different. Every child has different desires in learning methods. To make the learning process fun, I adjusted the learning style he expected.
Some children prefer to learn through practice, viewing visual media and listening to audio.
Identifying the desired learning style can be an attraction to feel comfortable learning. By knowing the child’s learning style, I can be more optimal in guiding the learning process. Because I can adjust to a learning style that is easily accepted.
There is nothing wrong with Home Learning. We know that Home Learning aims to stop the spread of COVID-19.
We shouldn’t focus on the COVID-19 virus, but we need to focus on cultivating good psychology in children.
The education process must continue amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only does it work, but the benefits that are obtained must be the same as during learning before the pandemic. Therefore, we must be able to help build a good psychic while studying at home.
